Verona FC was founded by 1967 in Blanchardstown by Noel Noonan, James Gargan, John Gargan, George Barton, Noel Hughes and Peter Hughes. In the formative years 1967-1970, the one senior team fielded played the home matches in the Phoenix Park (15 acres) in Dublin Metropolitan League. In the period 1970-1974 the club played home games at Moortown, Mulhuddart (Dollys) graduating to two senior teams, Saturday& Sunday & the first boys team was entered during this period. In 1975 the Club negotiated an agreement with the Dublin Diocesan Trust via. Canon Crowe and Fr Mc Geehan to use the local Parish Field for home matches & training. It was also agreed with the club to have a changing room clubhouse on adjacent parish grounds. This arrangement prevails to the present day. In 1982 the Club Chairman John Gill decided to re-activate the juvenile section & with Dave Smith, Noel Hughes and Peter Downey centrally involved, new under-age teams emerged. They were later joined by Sean Martin, Michael Salmon, Maxi Mc Donald and Eamonn McEntee. Circa 1989-2015 the club saw phenomenal growth with 35 underage teams, 3 senior teams, one over 35’s team and a ladies team. While already using Coolmine Park at Grove Rd, Fingal Co.Council gave the club exclusive use of these grounds. In 1991/92 Declan Mc Cluskey & Sean Martin negotiated the purchase of a plot of land from a Patrick Kavanagh which was situated adjacent to the playing pitches at Grove Road, Coolmine Park. The Club Executive Committee at this time led by then Chairman Declan Mc Cluskey & then President Noel Noonan, succeeded in building a Sports Complex on the site consisting of a modern Gymnasium, dressing rooms, offices, bar & social facility. It was officially opened in 1996 by President Mary Robinsosn & marked a new beginning with the club re-titled “ Verona Sports & Leisure Club” incorporating Verona FC. The Club now engage a Community Employment Scheme under the Supervision of Mrs Ann Colgan to assist in overall operations. The Club has a very proud history in amateur football and currently has a 356 membership in total.To-day the club fields 2 Senior Teams in the Leinster Senior League, 13 Juvenile Teams and 1 Over-35 team. The under-age teams compete in the Dublin District Schoolboy League. The Club's first team have won many leagues and cups over the years progressing via the AUL & Leinster Senior Leagues to Division 1 Sunday Leinster Senior. The juvenile teams have filled the Trophy Cabinets at the Club with successes at home and abroad in Leagues, Tournaments & Cups. Many of our under age players have moved to Premier, First Division and League of Ireland Teams. The Club also runs each year during the summer an annual mini-league for 300 children in the locality (boys & girls). Recently in Janurary 2016 the club announced an official partnership with the world renowned Coerver Coaching. This is a genuine coup for the club as it will be the only official partner in north Dublin. Coerver will overee coaching with our junior teams and players and supply top level coach education modules used in top clubs such as Real Madrid, Ajax, Arsenal and Stoke City. It will also run our youth academy alongside League of Ireland Legend, Declan (Fabio) O’Brien- for boys & girls aged 4-9yrs offering the best start for any child in football. Professional Coaching is something that most clubs can only dream of and introducing Coerver Coaching is a direct result of the hard work from our newly formed football commitee and a reflection on how far Verona has come in it's 50 year history . The Club have on site a Strength and Fitness Gymnasium operating each day from 6am–10pm & open for public membership. The Club also currently facilitate Real Transilvania FC & the Romanian Community in the neighbourhood & actively promote social inclusion . Stirling Service has been provided by volunteers over the years & a special thank you to all (living & deceased) for their contributions. A special appreciation to three members who have served on the committee continuously for over 45 years since the early days, namely, John Gill, John Peake and the late Tommy Fogarty who passed away recently. |
